In the early 1950s, NC State alumnus Thomas Thurmon “Tommy” Hayes, Jr., and Calvin Howell formed the architectural firm Hayes-Howell Architects based in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The firm played a significant role in constructing the built environment of Southern Pines and surrounding areas, while designing and building residential and commercial buildings throughout North Carolina. The collection contains drawings for notable buildings in North Carolina, such as the North Carolina State Hospital and United Telephone Company of the Carolina offices. In the 1950s and 1960s, Hayes-Howell & Associates designed and renovated several buildings on NC State University’s campus, including the Weisiger-Brown General Athletics Facility and Married Student Housing (E.S. King Village).

Hayes-Howell Architects (later known as Hayes-Howell & Associates and the Hayes-Howell Professional Association) merged with Anderson, Architecture, PPLC, in 2005. The firm was subsequently dissolved through the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Corporate Division. Thanks to cooperation from Anderson Architecture and the Tufts Archive in Pinehurst, North Carolina, the SCRC holds the existing architectural records for Hayes-Howell & Associates. In addition, the SCRC has several collections with related materials, including the Ernest H. Wood Papers, Richard Burke Schnedl Papers, Lewis Clarke Collection, G. Milton Small Papers, Design and Construction Services Department Records, Gordon H. Schenck, Jr. Photographs, Richard C. Bell Drawings and Other Materials, and the Office of the University Architect Records.
